Although swimming was already quite popular at ancient times, it was no part of the anthic Olympics. The first signs of competitive swimming came from Japan in 36 B.C., but it took till the 19th century before competitive swimming became popular, and it has been part of the modern Olympics from the start in 1896. The sport is regulated by the Fédération International de Natation Amateur, which was founded in 1908. There are 4 main disciplines in swimming, swum over different distances: freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke. In addition there are a number of combination and relay events. In the 1990's a new event swum outside the pool was integrated into the swimming sports: open water swimming.
