The game of volleyball was created by William Morgan (usa) in Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1895. His aim was to create a team sport without body-contact. A team consists of 6 players, the indoor court is divided into two 9x9m team-courts by a net. To get play started, a player throws the ball into the air and attempts to hit the ball so it passes over the net on a course such that it will land in the opposing team's court. The opposing team must use a combination of no more than three digs, sets or spikes to return the ball over the net from where it came. The game continues in this manner until an error is made. The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball was founded in 1947.
