Tennis has it's roots in the French game 'Jeu de Paume', which was played indoors. In the 18th century the English played this game on short mowed grass ('Lawn Tennis'). In 1877 the rules of tennis had been established by Major Wingfield in England, and the game spread through Europe and the USA in the following decades. The International Tennis Federation was founded in 1913. There are 4 major pro championships every year, the so called Grand Slam tournaments: Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open.
