Cross-County Skiing

Cross-Country Skiing is a recreational and competitive winter sport popular primarily in Europe and Canada. It is part of the Nordic skiing family, and has been practised in Scandinavia since prehistoric times. The skis, which are used, are long and thin. There are two main techniques in Cross-Country Skiing: classical, performed on prepared trails that have pairs of parallel grooves cut into the snow, and skating, where the angled pushing outward of the skis derives from ice skating. Events are held in both techniques and in several disciplines, like sprint, pursuit, mass start and relay. The Fédération Internationale de Ski governes all skiing sports, and was founded in 1924.
