A new variation of Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, has evolved from the popular social games of volleyball played on many beaches around the world. This version is played on sand courts. Instead of a team of six, each team consists of only two players, but otherwise the rules are identical. It started in Santa Monica, California (usa) in the 1920's, and a decade later it appeared in Europe. In the 1970's professional tournaments were born, and the sport established itself from there. In 1987 Beach Volleyball was integrated into the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball.
