American Football finds it's roots somewhere in the 2nd half of the 19th century, where Football and Rugby stood at the base of this new game. The rules were unified in 1874 as 'Harvard-rules', playing with teams of 11 players. Nowadays teams play with different teams for offense, defense and special tasks. The sport is one of the national sports in the USA, where the national pro-league NFL (dates back to 1919) and college football are big in attendance and coverage.
